The Underlying Cause of Hormonal Havoc and How to Win the Battle!

November 20, 2019

Do you spend most of your days walking around like a zombie because you haven't had a decent sleep in months?

Do your friends and family walk on eggshells when they are around you because your mood swings are so unpredictable they are scared the smallest thing might set you off?

Do you feel older than your years because of painful, aching, stiff joints and don't want to resort to a lifetime of anti-inflammatory medications just to get through the day?

If you answered YES to any of these statements then you are certainly not alone.

In fact, almost 50% of women over 40 have complained of persistent symptoms such as the ones listed below which are all indicative of excessive inflammation and a hormonal imbalance.

The different types of hormones:

In order to understand what causes a hormonal imbalance, we must first understand that there are different types of hormones; all of which, in a perfect world, would live together in total harmony.

Unfortunately however, when one hormone falls out of balance, it automatically has an impact on all other hormones which is why we experience such a wide range of frustrating symptoms that don't appear to be related; both physical and mental. When our hormones are out of balance, our neurotransmitters are also affected. These are the little messengers within our brain and our nervous system. This is why women struggling with hormonal imbalance often suffer with anxiety, depression, brain fog and lack of concentration.

Let's take a look at the 4 main categories of hormones; stress hormones, metabolic hormones, sex hormones and thyroid hormones.

1.  Stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine)

These hormones are released when our body perceives stress whether its physical or mental. Adrenaline in small bursts, is healthy for the body. Consider it like a muscle workout. When we feel a surge of adrenaline in response to a perceived stress, we feel it in the form of a rush of energy, elevated heart rate and elevated body temperature. These physiological changes are intended to help our body respond to the source of our stress. Once the cause of stress is no longer, then our adrenaline levels relax.

The problem however is when we are under chronic, unrelenting stress, which in modern times tends to be more mental and emotional rather than physical. When in this state, our body continuously secretes cortisol. When our cortisol level remains high for too long, our body becomes inflamed leading to join pain and other inflammatory conditions and slows down our metabolism and digestion significantly.

Increasing cortisol levels also drive up our levels of estrogen and insulin; neither of which is good news! (Read on.....)

2.  Metabolic hormones (insulin, glucagon)

Our metabolic hormones are responsible for regulating our blood sugar levels in our blood and help to determine whether we store fat or burn fat for energy. When we eat a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates with little lean protein or healthy fat, we cause our blood sugar levels to spike to quickly.

Unfortunately when our blood sugar levels spike, so does our insulin level in an attempt to bring the level of glucose in the blood down to a more normal level. So the more our blood sugar spikes, the more insulin we produce. The more insulin we produce, the more insulin resistant we become which means insulin starts to lose its effectiveness over time causing glucose levels to remain too high in the blood and promoting inflammation. Add to this the fact that a diet high in sugar and starchy carbohydrates leads to weight gain which in turn promotes even more inflammation.

And even further still, increasing levels of insulin will drive up cortisol levels as well...hence even more inflammation!

3.  Sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone)

Us ladies all know the havoc our sex hormones can cause; especially during different phases of our menstruation cycle, during pregnancy, menopause, etc. The severity of your uncomfortable symptoms during any of these phases of life will depend on whether your hormones are all in a healthy balance or not.

Unfortunately, our modern world, complete with artificial, processed, genetically-modified foods, chemicals and toxins in our environment and in our skincare and household cleaning products, is causing an epidemic of estrogen dominance. These toxins are known as xenoestrogens.

Estrogen dominance occurs due to constant exposure to xenoestrogens which mimic bad estrogen in the body resulting in excessively high levels. Estrogen is pro-inflammatory and therefore estrogen dominance has been linked to a number of female health issues such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, PCOS, painful, irregular periods, endometriosis and even some forms of cancer.

4. Thyroid hormones (TRH, TSH, T3, T4)

Whereas the previous hormones tend to cause issues when they are too high, thyroid hormones tend to cause issues when they are too low. Other hormonal changes such as an increase in estrogen, cortisol and insulin all lead to inflammation. Unfortunately chronic inflammation then has an impact on thyroid function.

From a dietary perspective, a diet high in sugar or an unbalanced diet that causes the blood sugar levels to spike too high and too often will lower the body's TSH levels (thyroid stimulating hormone). TSH is required to stimulate the production of T3 and T4, the active thyroid hormones responsible for regulating your metabolism, your sleep and your temperature, just to name a few important functions.

From a lifestyle perspective, stress management again is key because the thyroid and the adrenal glands (your "stress glands") work hand in hand. So if the adrenal glands are overworked and pumping out excessive levels of cortisol this will lower your levels of your thyroid hormones and have a negative impact on the body's ability to convert thyroid hormones into their active form.

Are you in a vicious cycle?

So did you see it? Did you catch the link between all 4 hormonal imbalances and the environment they create within the body?

Yes, that's right....HORMONE IMBALANCES ARE PRIMARILY A RESULT OF POOR DIETARY CHOICES AND INABILITY TO MANAGE STRESS.

AND HORMONAL IMBALANCE CAUSES PERSISTENT AND CHRONIC INFLAMMATION!

Struggling with gut issues too? You can thank inflammation for those too!

In fact, you are likely to find you are struggling with all three imbalances because they are all connected and impact on each other. However the good news is, fix one imbalance and the others will fall into place too!

Inflammation is now being linked to almost all physical and mental health conditions in some form.

Some inflammation is helpful of course. When our body is fighting an acute infection or is trying to heal a wound, acute inflammation is part of our body's natural healing process. Without it, we would struggle to fight off viruses and bacteria.

However, chronic, excessive inflammation wears the body down. And when left untreated, all the symptoms we discussed above and more start to rear their ugly head.

So what's the answer?

Reduce toxicity and excessive inflammation through necessary dietary and lifestyle changes to get those hormones back into balance!

And the best way to get the ball rolling??? NATURAL DETOXIFICATION!

What is Detoxification?

Detoxification is about resting, cleansing, and nourishing the body from the inside out.

By removing and eliminating toxins and then feeding your body with healthy, anti-inflammatory nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your energy and ability to maintain a healthy weight.

Since your liver is your main detoxification organ and is responsible for regulating all your blood levels, producing hormones and filtering out toxins, we need to give it some love!

Steps to supporting a healthy liver detoxification:

  • Ensure proper digestion and healthy bowel habits.

  • Avoid environmental toxins/stressors.

  • Increase water and fibre intake.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol, unhealthy saturated fats (fried food), and refined sugar and carbs.

  • Ensure a healthy, clean diet and appropriate supplementation.

Where to Start?

To help support a healthy digestion and regular bowel habits you must first eliminate the “bad guys!”

In order to detoxify effectively, we need to eliminate the foods that are “clogging” up our system.

Remember, we detoxify every day! Every minute of every day our body is dealing with foreign invaders—from the air we breathe to the food we eat, from what we drink to the chemicals we come in contact with.

If we don’t eliminate the foods that cause the most stress on our system, how can we begin to eliminate toxic buildup and create a space for our cells to thrive?

Here’s what needs to go first:

  • GLUTEN – pasta, bread, cereal, baked goods made with wheat, rye, spelt, kamut, or barley

  • DAIRY – factory-farmed dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt, and cream (only include organic grass-fed dairy products if tolerated)

  • PROCESSED SUGAR – all processed sugars

  • PROCESSED FOODS – canned/boxed foods

  • ALCOHOL

  • CAFFEINE – coffee, black tea

  • FOODS THAT CONTAIN UNHEALTHY FATS – anything deep fried, anything with trans fat, anything with hydrogenated fats

  • RED MEAT – unless it’s grass-fed beef/hormone and antibiotic free

Second, you must eliminate as many toxins as possible from your lifestyle known as "xenoestrogens". Here is a list of actions you should start to implement now to reduce your exposure to these hormone mimickers so you can keep your hormones in balance:

Tips to Avoid Xenoestrogens:

  • Avoid all pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Wash your food well to rid the pesticides. Bathe the washed food in a produce wash or ozonated water for 20 minutes before cooking.

  • Have a good water filter for your source of water.

  • Use only organic based whole foods when you can. Buy hormone free meats and dairy products where possible.

  • Avoid plastic goods - they leach into the environment.

  • Do not microwave food in plastic containers, and especially avoid the use of plastic wrap to cover food for microwaving.

  • Use glass or ceramics whenever possible to store food.

  • Do not leave plastic containers, especially your drinking water, in the sun.

  • If a plastic water container has heated up significantly, throw it away - do not drink the water either.

  • Don't use fabric softeners as it puts petrochemicals right on your skin.

  • Use a simple laundry and dish detergent with less chemicals.

  • Use organic soaps and toothpastes. Avoid fluoride.

  • Avoid creams and cosmetics that have toxic chemicals and estrogenic ingredients such as parabens and stearal konium chloride. Use natural products. Cheap products usually have more toxic ingredients.

  • Avoid nail polish and nail polish removers.

  • Use only naturally based perfumes. Most perfumes are petrochemically based.

  • Avoid surfactants found in many condoms and diaphragm gels.

  • Avoid new carpet - it can give off noxious fumes.

  • Avoid X-rays as much as possible.

  • Be aware of noxious gas such as that from copiers and printers, carpets, fiberboards, etc. Computer monitors can emit a high level of electromagnetic force (EMF).

When attempting to transition over to organic foods, consider starting with the “Dirty Dozen” (see the list below). This is a list of the most common foods with a high toxic exposure. Start by transitioning to an organic source of these foods first.

  1. Strawberries

  2. Spinach

  3. Kale

  4. Nectarines

  5. Apples

  6. Grapes

  7. Peaches

  8. Cherries

  9. Pears

  10. Tomatoes

  11. Celery

  12. Potatoes

Why does this work?

Every time you eat a meal, your body regroups in its fight against you.

From the additives found in everyday foods to the toxins that have entered the unnatural 21st century diet and lifestyle…

The food you’re eating right now and the toxins that are building up inside your body are keeping you trapped in a vicious cycle.

And you’ve likely experienced the impact everywhere...

  • Sleepless nights spent tossing and turning

  • Mood swings and painful periods

  • Constant cravings for sweet or salty foods

  • High blood pressure, low blood Sugar, or a slow metabolism

  • Frustration when you can’t lose weight

  • Lack of motivation and willpower

As your liver attempts to filter out the toxins you eat and absorb through your skin, your brain and body start to shut down.

Here’s the good news…

You may be struggling now, but in just 10 days you can feel like a brand-new person!

And you’re not going to need another fad fitness plan filled with energy draining workouts to do it! So ask yourself…
